Apparently, all of these kind of helicopters are named after native tribes, and this brand new one was named, "The Lakota", the predominant tribal group in our area. They had a state-wide contest for kids to design a poster advertising the new chopper, and someone in the third grade class had won in their division, earning the school this special visit.
Everyone from the school and surrounding homes gathered to see the exciting guests touch down. (Most of the kids in this picture are in Joseph's second grade class.)
Jonah didn't know what to think of it! Of course, part of that was because it was his nap time.
When it was safe we were invited to move in for a closer view:
First, all of the classes and families were invited to take pictures in front of the helicopter.
Then the army guys hung around for about an hour answering questions and showing people the parts of the machinery.
Elora found this information pretty interesting, but our little boys weren't as excited by it as I thought they'd be.
I think they mostly enjoyed being around all of the other people. And playing with the rope that was set out around the helicopter. Look at it go!
All too soon, it was time for our interesting guests to leave.
We tried to take a video of it taking off, but it seemed to take forever before the finally lifted off! "Mom, are they gone yet?"
"See ya later guys!"
Incidentally, this field is the track and football field for the school. Crazy, huh?

That's cool that you guys got to see a helicopter. Patrick thought it was interesting how they're all named for Native tribes. I think it's funny that Elora was more interested then the boys...I think James would like to see a helicopter. He and Henry both really like planes and trucks and tractors and other generically boy stuff like that. ;)
